Spartans lend a hand to local baseball team
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Members of the UNCG baseball team recently went out into the community to work with a local baseball team and teach them some of the fundamentals of the game.
Eleven student-athletes on the 2011 baseball team went to teach members of the Northern Knights 11-and-under baseball team at Northern Guilford High School. The Northern Knights are a member of the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA).
The student-athletes who participated in the instructional session were Chris Barker, Trevor Edwards, Lloyd Enzor, Zach Furl, Drew Gehringer, Joe Hager, Colby Hyatt, Ashton Paige, Pete Schultz and Thomas Troelstrup.
"This was a wonderful opportunity for our players to go out into the community and promote youth baseball, as well as UNCG athletics," said coach Mike Gaski. "This event allowed our players to teach these kids the necessary fundamentals of baseball that can carry them to successful athletic careers as they get older"
The Spartan student-athletes divided the Knights into their respective positions and worked with each individual kid on the basic fundamentals of fielding, throwing and hitting.
The goal of the event was to create awareness for not only UNCG baseball, but for the entire athletic department. The event gave members of the team the opportunity to promote youth baseball, as well as giving back to the local supporters of UNCG athletics.
