UNCG seventh in SoCon poll, Overholtzer named to second team

SPARTANBURG, SC – The UNC Greensboro baseball team was picked to finish seventh by the coaches and the media in the Southern Conference preseason poll, the league office announced Thursday. UNCG outfielder Corey Overholtzer was named to the Preseason All-Southern Conference Second Team.

After finishing last season with a 33-27 overall record and 15-12 record in the SoCon, the Spartans received 51 votes in the coaches poll and 91 votes in the media poll. UNCG was just one vote shy of Western Carolina in the coaches poll for sixth place. Elon, who became the first team in seven seasons to win both the regular-season and tournament titles, was picked to repeat this season after receiving most of the first-place votes in both polls.

Both polls were similar except Georgia Southern and the College of Charleston swapped spots. Georgia Southern had three first-place votes in the coaches poll to fall into the second slot, while the College of Charleston received an extra first-place vote in the media poll to finish second.

Overholtzer, a junior from Frederick, MD, was named to the second team after a tremendous sophomore campaign. Last year, he had a .350 batting average, which was second-best on the team, and 44 RBI. He also had the second-most hits on the team with 78.

Overholtzer led the team with six triples last season. That was good enough for fourth on the single-season triple list in school history. He is also on pace to be one of the all-time leaders in school history for games played after playing in 113 games in his first two seasons, including starting 104 of those contests.

The Spartans will kick off their 2009 season next Friday, Feb. 20, as they begin a three-game series against No. 18 Kent State.
