UNCG unveils 2009 baseball schedule

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro baseball head coach Mike Gaski has released the 2009 schedule.  The slate includes 56 regular-season games, with 35 of those taking place at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

First pitch of the 2009 season will take place at 4 p.m. on Feb. 20 when the Spartans host Kent State.  UNCG and the Golden Flashes will play a three-game series that also includes game times on Feb. 21 (1 p.m.) and Feb. 22 (1 p.m).  The Spartans open the road portion of their schedule on Feb. 25 when they head to Campbell.  UNCG returns home for a three-game series with Princeton on Feb. 27-Mar. 1 and then welcomes La Salle on Mar. 2.  The Spartans are at Duke on Mar. 4 before opening Southern Conference action with a three-game series at College of Charleston on Mar. 6-8.  With the addition of Samford to the conference, the SoCon will play a 30-game slate for the first-time ever.  The Mar. 6 date will be the earliest time a SoCon game has been played.

UNCG will begin a nine-game homestand, its longest of the season, on Mar. 11 as Old Dominion comes to Greensboro.  Georgia Southern will be the first SoCon team to come to the UNCG Baseball Stadium in the 2009 season as the Eagles visit Mar. 13-15.  The Spartans wrap up the homestand with a pair of games against Lafayette Mar. 17-18 and a three-game series with Albany Mar. 20-22.

The Spartans are on the road on Mar. 24 at North Carolina State, who advanced to the 2008 NCAA Baseball Athens Super Regional, before welcoming High Point on Mar. 25.  UNCG will also host Samford for a three-game SoCon series at the UNCG Baseball Stadium on Mar. 27-29.  The Spartans conclude the month of March with a game against North Carolina A&T at NewBridge Park on Mar. 31.

UNCG is at Wake Forest on Apr. 1 and then goes to defending SoCon champion Elon on Apr. 3-5 for a three-game series.  The Spartans are back at UNCG Baseball Stadium with a game versus Duke on Apr. 8 before returning to the road with a three-game conference series at Wofford Apr. 9-11.  UNCG returns home with Wake Forest on Apr. 15, a three-game series with The Citadel on Apr. 17-19 and a game against North Carolina State on Apr. 21.  The Spartans have a three-game series at Davidson on Apr. 24-26.  North Carolina A&T makes the cross-town trip to UNCG Baseball Stadium on Apr. 28, while on Apr. 29, the Spartans visit High Point.

UNCG opens the month of May with an eight-game homestand.  The month kicks off with a three-game series against Western Carolina on May 1-3, while Campbell visits on May 5.  The Spartans play their final home conference series on May 8-10 when they welcome Appalachian State.  UNC Asheville visits on May 13, which will mark the Spartans' final out-of-conference and home game of the regular season.  Meanwhile, UNCG plays its final regular-season series at Furman on May 14-16.

The 2009 SoCon Championship will take place on May 20-24 at Fluor Field in Greenville, SC.

UNCG finished the 2008 season with an overall record of 33-27 and a conference mark of 15-12.  The Spartans return 23 players from last year's roster, including second-team All-SoCon selection Greg Martin.
