UNCG Baseball announces 2008 schedule

GREENSBORO, NC – On Tuesday, UNC Greensboro head baseball coach Mike Gaski announced the 2008 baseball schedule. The 56-game season includes 38 home games, 18 away games, nine conference series, and the Southern Conference Championship Tournament held in Charleston, SC.

The Spartans kickoff the season at home against MAC champion Kent State with a three-game series on February 22-24.  A week later UNCG plays host to the University of Connecticut February 29-March 2. The Spartans then hit the road for the first time on March 5 when they take on last year’s ACC Tournament runner-up Wake Forest.

The schedule includes several highlight match-ups. The Spartans will play two mid-week games with CSTV’s preseason No. 18-ranked team Clemson in Clemson, SC on March 11 and 12. UNCG faces its first SoCon opponent March 21-23 when they travel to Boone, NC for a three-game series with the Appalachian State Mountaineers.

The Spartans then have a midweek, two-game series with the America East champion Albany on Tuesday, March 25 and Wednesday, March 26. UNCG then travels to Cullowhee, NC to face off with the Western Carolina Catamounts for a three-day series beginning March 28. The Catamounts earned the conference’s NCAA bid after winning the SoCon tournament title last season.

On April 1, the Spartans play the CSTV preseason No. 2-ranked team North Carolina. The two teams meet again on April 15 in Greensboro. The Tar Heels are the two-time national runner-up. The last time the Tar Heels visited Greensboro, in 2005, UNCG knocked off the then-No. 1 ranked team.

The next day the Spartans take the field at NewBridge Bank Park, home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers, for the annual night game with cross-town rival North Carolina A&T.

UNCG closes out the regular season at home May 14-16 against Davidson.

The 2008 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament will be played in Charleston, SC from May 20-25.
