Martin, Gilliam victorious in All-Star baseball clashes
GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro’s Greg Martin and Rob Gilliam both took part in All-Star baseball action this summer.
Martin, a member of the Rochester (MN) Honkers and native of Chapel Hill, NC, drew attention on the mound in his one inning of play as he retired one batter while allowing no hits and no walks. The Honkers went on to win the Northwoods All-Star game, 3-2, which was held Wednesday, July 11 at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato, MN. The Honkers go into the final games of the season with a record of 13-16. Their final match-up is set for Tuesday, August 14 against the Waterloo Bucks.
In Virginia, Gilliam helped the Valley League Baseball North All-Stars to a 2-0 shutout against the South on Sunday July 8 at Bing Crosby Stadium in Front Royal, VA. Gilliam, a member of the Luray Wrangler baseball team and another Chapel Hill, NC native, collected the win for the North as he struckout two and allowed just one hit in his one inning on the mound. In all, 23 hurlers saw time on the mound as none worked more than one inning.
The North squad includes members from Fauquier, Front Royal, Haymarket, Lauray, Winchester, and Woodstock while the South team is composed of players from Waynesboro, Harrisonburg, Covington, New Market, and Staunton. The Wranglers, currently 31-21, are scheduled to play their final game of the season Saturday, August 11.
