GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro senior Greg Feltes was recently named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Three First Team as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
A Rocky River, Ohio native, Feltes is used mainly as the team’s designated hitter in the three spot. The finance major holds a 3.44 GPA and already this season, he has worked his way onto several of UNCG’s Top 10 lists and has tied a single-game record.
To date in season records, he is tied at No. 8 with 11 home runs. In the career books, he is No. 4 in at-bats with 674, in seventh with 206 hits, and is tied at eighth with 194 games played in his four years as a Spartan. He is also listed at No. 7 with 156 runs scored, tied at No. 7 with 39 doubles, ninth with 106 RBI, tied for the No. 9 spot with 19 home runs, tied at the 10-spot with seven triples. In addition, he leads in an unfortunate category, hit by pitch, after being struck 33 times while at bat.
During the May 4, 18-17 victory over the College of Charleston at home, Feltes earned his way onto another UNCG record listing after registering five runs scored in a single game. On that list he joins fellow seniors Tim Carrier and Matt Gaski, along with three other former Spartans, Dominic Pattie, Joey DeAngelis, and Chris Healy.
On April 30, he landed himself in the Southern Conference record books after tallying his 200th career hit during the April 30 game against UNCG Ashville. As just the second Spartan to make the list, he joined former player, Ryan Gordon (2000-04).
Other notables from the season, from March 11-March 30, he held the team’s longest hit streak after going 14 straight, in the March 25 game against UAlbany, he hit a season high two home runs, and in the April 9 game against Duke he stole dual bases. Thus far he has tallied 18 multi hit games and in nine games he has recorded two or more RBI.
As a first-team selection, Feltes is now eligible for the All-America team. Voting is set to begin later this month. To be considered for the award, the nominee must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials, must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 (on a 4.0 scale), and must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing.
Feltes joins just one other student-athlete from the Southern Conference, Chris Swauger from The Citadel, on the 11-man team.
This weekend, UNCG is in Statesboro, GA taking on the Georgia Southern Eagles. The three-game, weekend series will put an end to the Spartans’ regular season road action. First pitch on Friday is set for 7pm with a 6pm start on Saturday and a 1:30pm start on Sunday.
