UNCG's Orton named SoCon Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, SC – For the second week in a row, UNC Greensboro has claimed the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week title. Last week’s selection, outfielder Corey Overholtzer has passed the baton to this week’s selection, first baseman Ricky Orton.

Orton, a senior from Bakersfield, CA tabbed a five-game batting average of .524 (11-for-21) this past week. In all but one game he tallied a minimum of two hits and in all five he scored at least a run.

He goes into this week’s action batting .419 (18-for-43) with 15 runs, 11 walks, 10 RBI, seven doubles, and two homeruns. In the field, his has recorded a team-high 97 putouts with 13 assists.

Last week alone, he tallied nine runs, five RBI, four doubles, four walks, and two homeruns. His first HR came against Wake Forest on Wednesday. His second shot over the fence proved to be the game-winner in the 3-2 victory over Ohio on Sunday.

UNCG will hit the road on Tuesday for Clemson, SC. The Spartans and the Clemson Tigers will face off for two 4pm games starting Tuesday evening at the Doug Kingsmore Stadium. This is the first time the two teams have met on the diamond.
