UNCGs Deleo named to 2008 watch list
WICHITA, KS – On Monday, UNC Greensboro’s senior catcher Adam Deleo was named to the official watch list for the 2008 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award delivered by AT&T and Papa John’s Pizza. Announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, the list consists of thirty-six catchers from twenty-two conferences nominated by their respective coaches.
Until May 5, the watch list will continue to be updated and will be narrowed down to ten in mid-May. The top three candidates will be announced on June 3, prior to the NCAA Super Regionals and the Major League Baseball Draft. A national committee will submit their votes during the College World Series with the winner set to be announced at the 11th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 27 in Wichita, KS.
Deleo, a Wilmington, NC native, has started five of his six games played this year for the Spartans. Behind the plate, he has tallied 32 putouts in 33 chances and has notched one assist. On March 1, he caught his first batter stealing with a throw to second to pickoff Connecticut’s Ben Olt.
With bat in hand, Deleo is second on the team with a .429 average (9-for-21), seven RBI, five runs, two doubles, and a triple. He racked up a season high six RBI in the 18-1 victory over Connecticut on February 29. Two days later, he sent a shot into leftfield to bring in the winning run and give the Spartans the three-game sweep over UCONN.
UNCG is on the road Wednesday with a 2:30pm game against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in Winston-Salem, NC. The blue and gold will return home on Thursday to take on Valparaiso before opening a three-game home series against Ohio on Friday. First pitch on Thursday is set for 2pm with Friday’s game getting underway at 6pm.
