Overholtzer named SoCon Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro sophomore Corey Overholtzer has been named the 2008 season’s first Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week.
The outfielder from Frederick, MD led the team in batting as the Spartans swept a three-game home series against Connecticut. UNCG outscored UCONN, 34-7, taking respective 18-1, 15-6, and 1-0 victories.
Overholtzer went 7-for-9 (.788) at the plate with four runs. Four of his total eight RBI came from a right field grand slam late in Saturday’s game. He also notched a double and a triple on the weekend.
Overall, Overholtzer is 10-for-14 (.714). In his five games played, he has tallied nine RBI, six runs, two home runs, two doubles, and one triple. He has also recorded a team-high 20 total bases.
With a 5-1 record, UNCG is on a four-game win streak following the UCONN sweep and a 4-3, 10th-inning victory over Kent State on February 24.
The Spartans will have five games in five days beginning with a 2:30pm road game against Wake Forest on Wednesday. On Thursday, they return home for a single game against Valparaiso at 2pm and the following day, they begin a three game home series against Ohio. First pitch for Friday is set for 6pm.
