Jermaine Mitchell promoted to Class AA by the Oakland As
GREENSBORO, NC – Former UNC Greensboro baseball standout Jermaine Mitchell made it one step closer to the Major Leagues on Tuesday when he was promoted to Class AA Midland (TX) by the Oakland Athletics.
He is expected to join the club immediately and help the RockHounds wrap up the regular season this Sunday. The club currently sits in first place and will enter the Texas League playoffs next week.
Mitchell played with Vancouver of the Class A Northwest League this summer. He hit .362 in 37 games for the Canadians with three home runs, two triples, seven doubles and 14 stolen bases. He also posted a .460 on-base percentage and a .507 slugging percentage for a .967 OPS.
In addition to his promotion, he was also named the Northwest League Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday after hitting .400 (10-25) with eight runs, four doubles, three homers, eight RBI and had two steels.
Mitchell got the nod largely on the strength of two spectacular games against Everett. On Saturday, the centerfielder went 4-for-5 with three doubles, a homer and three RBIs as the Canadians beat the Emeralds, 8-6. On Sunday, Mitchell went 3-for-5 with two homers, three RBIs and five runs scored as Vancouver coasted to a 20-7 win.
Mitchell, who played centerfield for the Spartans in 2006, was selected 158th overall in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on June 6, making him the second-highest draft selection in school history.
A native of Daingerfield, TX, Mitchell was a first team All-Southern Conference selection in his only season with UNCG. He led the SoCon with a .397 batting average, while also pacing the league with a .458 batting average in SoCon action. Mitchell led the Spartans in slugging percentage (.568), on-base percentage (.493), hits (93), triples (7), home runs (5), total bases (133), RBIs (41), walks (42) and stolen bases (24).
