UNCG falls 6-1 to Davidson in SoCon baseball opener

DAVIDSON, NC – Davidson’s Rob Wilson allowed only four hits and no runs in seven innings on the mound as UNC Greensboro fell 6-1 to Davidson in UNCG’s Southern Conference baseball opener on Friday evening at Wilson Field.

Wilson (1-1) took the win for the Wildcats and struck out a game-high seven batters, while Zach Kanye and Matt Webb each pitched an inning of relief for Davidson.

Senior Ryan Falcon (1-5) was credited with the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings of work. Falcon struck out a team-high four batters. Sophomore Clinton McKinney put in two innings on the mound and did not give up a run, while Kory Judd also did not give up a run in relief for the Spartans.

Davidson (14-10) took the 1-0 lead in the home half of the second off a groundout RBI from Blake Osborn. The Wildcats tacked on two runs in the third to go up 3-0. After a single, walk and three stolen bases, Alden Crissey sent a two RBI single to right field.

The Wildcats continued to build their lead and added a run in the sixth when Osborn singled up the middle to score Wilson, who doubled earlier to make it 4-0.

UNCG (11-10) got on the board in the eighth to cut the lead, 4-1. Junior Adam Deleo singled to center and advanced to third on a groundout and a single before coming home on a balk. Davidson would answer with a two-run homerun from Gregory Zage in the bottom of the inning to take the 6-1 lead and eventual win.

Deleo and classmate Matt Gaski, along with senior Guy Welsh, all produced two hits for the Spartans. 

The two teams continue the three-game series on Saturday at 1 pm at Wilson Field.
