Mitchell and Currin named to SoCon all-conference team
CHARLESTON, SC – The Southern Conference announced Wednesday the naming of Jermaine Mitchell as a first team all-conference member and Patrick Currin as a second team all-conference selection for their performances on the field during the 2006 baseball season.
A native of Daingerfield, TX, Mitchell led the SoCon in the regular season with an even .400 average while hitting also pacing the league with a .458 batting average in SoCon action. Mitchell also leads the team in slugging percentage (.568), on-base percentage (.496), hits (91), triples (6), home runs (5), total bases (129), walks (41) and stolen bases (23). The junior is also tied for the team lead with 39 RBI.
Mitchell also finished the regular season ranked in the Top 10 in the conference in most of the major offensive categories. He completed his first season as a Spartan tied for second in triples, tied for third in stolen bases, sixth in walks, tied for fifth in total bases and second in on-base percentage. His 91 hits this season leave him ranked second on the school’s single season hit list.
Currin, a native of Chapel Hill, NC, capped his season senior in style as the relief pitcher finished his final year in Greensboro the unquestioned leader of the Spartan pitching staff. Currin paced UNCG in both wins (10) and saves (8) and was the only player in the SoCon to rank in both the Top 10 in the league in wins and saves. He also posted a team-low ERA (2.93) and was second on the team with 71 strikeouts.
While leading the SoCon with 38 appearances on the hill this season, Currin picked up either the win or save in over 70 percent of the Spartans’ victories this season. Earlier in the year, the right-hander pitched out of jams in both the eighth and ninth innings to earn a save in UNCG’s upset victory over No. 1 North Carolina to preserve the school’s first ever win over a top-ranked team in the Division I era.
