Mitchell tabbed SoCon baseball Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, SC – The Southern Conference announced on Monday that UNC Greensboro centerfielder Jermaine Mitchell has been named the league’s baseball Player of the Week for his performance in a three-game series with Wofford over the weekend.

Mitchell batted .636 (7-for-11) with three doubles, four runs and five RBIs in the Spartans’ three-game sweep of Wofford.   The Daingerfield, TX native opened the series by going 3-for-4 and drove in the game-winning run on a one-out double in the eighth.   Mitchell then went a combined 4-for-7 in Saturday’s doubleheader, delivering a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth of game one to drive in two runs to tie the game at 7-7.   He finished the week with a .909 slugging percentage and a .714 on-base percentage.

Mitchell now leads the SoCon with a total of 81 base hits and is second in the league with a .393 batting average, trailing Georgia Southern’s Greg Dowling by only a hundredth of a point (3.94).  Mitchell also ranks in the top 10 in the league in triples (t-2nd, 6), stolen bases (5th, 18), walks (5th, 36), total bases (t-3rd, 117), on-base percentage (3rd, .488).  He now stands in fourth place on UNCG’s all-time single season hit list.

The Spartans return to the diamond Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. when UNCG travels to Chapel Hill, NC for a mid-week contest with North Carolina.  Earlier this season, the Spartans upset then No. 1 ranked North Carolina for the school’s first even win over a top-ranked team in the Division I era.
