Erica Thornton is in her fourth year as the head athletic
trainer at UNCG and her 11th year overall as part of the
UNCG athletic training department. She is also an adjunct
instructor in the department of Kinesiology. Thornton works with
the UNCG women’s soccer.
Thornton oversees the entire athletic training department,
including supervision of staff, budget oversight and is overseer of
the student-athlete welfare policy development. She has worked to
develop the UNCG Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) Concussion
Management Policy, the ICA Sickle Cell Trait policy and the ICA
Lightning Policy.
Thornton was promoted to head athletic trainer in March of 2009
after spending six years as the associate head athletic trainer
(2003-2009) and one year as the assistant athletic trainer. She
worked with the UNCG women’s basketball team (2002-06) and
has been with the women’s soccer program since 2006.
Prior to UNCG, Thornton spent two-plus years as an assistant
athletic trainer at Appalachian State, where she worked with the
women’s basketball team.
Thornton spent two years as the University of Florida as a
graduate assistant where she obtained her master of science in
exercise and sports sciences in 1999. While at Florida, she worked
with the women’s swimming and diving team while assisting
with women’s basketball, women’s gymnastics and track
and field.
Thornton earned her bachelor of science degree from SUNY Brockport
in 1996 with an athletic training concentration. She has been NATA
Board Certified since June of 1996. She has comprehensive Pilates
certification from the PhysicalMind Institute and FMS Level I
certification. She is also a member of the North Carolina Athletics
Trainers’ Association.
Thornton lives in Greensboro with her husband, Kevin, daughter
Braedy (4) and two Siberian huskies.
