Spartan men third, women fourth in SoCon all-sports races

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s men are in third and women are in fourth after the fall season competition in the Southern Conference’s all-sports races.

The Commissioner’s Cup and Germann Cup are awarded annually to the Southern Conference schools fielding the league’s best all-around men’s and women’s sports programs. Schools earn points based upon their regular-season finishes, with two bonus points going to the team that wins the conference tournament.

The Spartans men accumulated 24 points toward the Commissioner’s Cup, an impressive feat given that UNCG does not field a team in football, one of the three fall sports. The Spartans’ total is bolstered by a regular-season league title in soccer and a SoCon Championship win by the cross country team. Furman leads the men’s race with 30 points, while Appalachian State is second with 28.

UNCG finished second in the Commissioner’s Cup standings last year.

UNCG’s women are fourth in the race for the Germann Cup after finishing fifth a year ago, just 1.5 points out of first. This year, the Spartans won the cross country championship, finished tied for second in the league in women’s soccer and finished in a tie for fourth in the SoCon’s North Division in volleyball for a total of 26.5 points, just a point behind Furman in third. Samford sits atop the standings with 33 points, while College of Charleston is second with 29.5 points.

The Commissioner’s Cup was introduced in 1970 and the Germann Cup was first awarded in 1987. The latter is named after Ken Germann, who served as commissioner of the Southern Conference from 1974-86 and spearheaded the effort to introduce women’s athletics to the league.
