UNCG women first, men fourth in SoCon all-sports races

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG is in solid contention in the Southern Conference all-sports races for both the men’s and women’s sports, as UNCG’s women lead the league and the men are fourth after the fall season of competition.

The Spartan women hold a five-point lead over second-place Samford in the race for the Germann Cup, presented annually to the top all-around women's athletics program in the league. UNCG earned 33 points with regular-season and tournament titles in women’s soccer, a second-place finish in volleyball's North Division and a third-place finish at the league cross country meet.

Samford, the defending Germann Cup winner, won the women’s cross country meet and took second in women’s soccer.

UNCG picked up 24 points in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, just a half a point behind Elon in third and just two points out of second despite not having football like the rest of the teams in the top six. The Spartans shared the regular-season title and won the tournament in men’s soccer and finished second in the men’s cross country meet.

Appalachian State compiled 32 points to lead the race for the Commissioner’s Cup, given annually to the SoCon school with the top all-around men’s athletic program. The Mountaineers won the football and men’s cross country titles. Furman is second with 26 points.
