Twenty-four UNCG student-athletes named Academic All-SoCon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Twenty-four UNCG student-athletes earned spots on the spring 2010 Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Wednesday. The Spartans’ Joey Thompson (men’s track and field) and Mikayla Rogers (women’s tennis) accounted for two of the six perfect 4.0 GPAs in the league.

In all, a total of 318 student-athletes across the league made the team, which includes student-athletes from the sports of baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. The team posted a cumulative 3.54 GPA on a 4.0 scale. All 12 member institutions were represented on the squad, with Samford leading the way with 36 selections.

To be eligible, student-athletes must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the spring season and had to compete in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the spring campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.

UNCG’s men’s track and field led the way for the Spartans with six selections, while women’s tennis and women’s golf had four each. Women’s track and field and softball had three each, baseball had two and men’s tennis and men’s golf had one apiece.
