SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Twenty-three UNCG student-athletes earned spots on the spring 2011 Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Thursday. The Spartans had a league-best four of the 13 student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPAs.
A total of 326 student-athletes across the league made the team, which includes student-athletes from the sports of baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field and men’s and women’s tennis. The group recorded a combined 3.57 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. All 12 member schools had at least 20 representatives on the team, with Appalachian State and Western Carolina leading the way with 34 each.
To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the spring season and had to compete in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the spring campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
Ashley Schnell (women’s track and field), Zach Reece (men’s tennis) and Alex Whitehead and Mikayla Rogers (women’s tennis) carry 4.0 GPAs for the Spartans.
Women’s track and field led the way for the Spartans with five selections, while men’s track and field had four. Men’s and women’s tennis had three each, while baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf had two each.
