Nineteen Spartans earn spots on winter Academic All-SoCon team
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Nineteen UNCG student-athletes earned spots on the winter 2010-11 Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Thursday. The Spartans’ Ashley Schnell (women’s track and field) was one of seven student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPAs in the league.
In all, a total of 191 student-athletes across the league made the team, which includes student-athletes from the sports of men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field and wrestling. The team posted a cumulative 3.55 GPA on a 4.0 scale. All 12 member institutions were represented on the squad, with Samford leading the way with 24 selections.
To be eligible, student-athletes must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the winter season and had to compete in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the winter campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
Women’s track and field led the way for the Spartans with six selections, while women’s basketball and men’s track and field had five selections each. Men’s basketball had a pair earn the distinction, while Travis Sheehy of the wrestling team also earned a spot on the team.
