GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team won the series finale in walk off fashion 12-10 to salvage a split against Chattanooga Sunday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans are 14-17, 3-6 in SoCon play with the doubleheader split against Chattanooga who is 19-14, 5-2 in SoCon action this season.
Chattanooga 2, UNCG 1
In game one, the Mocs scored a key seventh inning run to seal a 2-1 victory.
In a pitching duel, senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) took the loss in a complete game effort. Hanks went seven innings, allowing just two earned runs with four strikeouts. Katie Henderson picked up her 10th win after throwing three shutout innings in relief. Taylor Deason started going four innings allowing one unearned run.
Junior Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) led the Spartans at the plate going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Chattanooga scored first off a RBI groundout from Anyssa Robles. Sarah Beth Roberts worked a walk to leadoff the game and moved to second off a wild pitch. After back-to-back groundouts, the Mocs were able to score a run without a hit.
In the bottom of the third, UNCG tied the game at 1-1 after a throwing error from Chattanooga led to a run scoring from second base. Alcala singled to third base to start the rally. After a groundout, Alcala moved to second with one out. Junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) singled in the infield and an errant throw allowed Alcala to score to even the game at 1-1.
Chattanooga took a 2-1 lead after a one out RBI single from Anyssa Robles. Beth Roberts started the inning with a double to left center. After an out, Robles lined the go-ahead RBI off the left field wall.
In the bottom of the seventh, UNCG had one last chance but couldn’t tie the game as the Mocs clinched the series victory with the win.
UNCG 12, Chattanooga 10
In game two, senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) hit a walk off two-run home run to give the Spartans a wild 12-10 victory and salvage a game in the three-game series against Chattanooga.
Bedwell finished 2-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI. Nicole Thomas went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. Lindsay Thomas was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs score while Madruga was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Classmate Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) also finished with two hits and an RBI.
The first six batters in the UNCG lineup combined for 12 of the 13 hits and all 12 runs batted in.
UNCG jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning after Bedwell hammered a three-run shot, her second home run of the season. Lindsay Thomas followed with a double and Vega singled. Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) earned an RBI off a fielder’s choice to push UNCG’s lead to 4-0.
In the second inning, Chattanooga scored off an error to cut the lead to 4-1. Stephanie Rieck worked a walk to start the inning. After a strikeout, Kaiti Dutton singled to put runners on first and second base. Sam Taylor fouled out to left field before Beth Roberts reached on an error by UNCG allowing a runner to score.
The Spartans scored three runs on four hits to go up 7-1 on Chattanooga. With one out, Alcala singled and Madruga was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout, Lindsay Thomas singled through the infield for an RBI. Vega followed with an RBI single up the middle to plate the second run. Nicole Thomas lined a RBI single to centerfield for the third run of the inning.
The Mocs would not go away plating four runs in the third inning off four hits and a Spartan error. Robles started the inning with a solo home run. Nicole Osterman singled to left field to keep the rally going. After an out, Rieck reached on an error to put runners on first and second base. Cricket Blanco doubled off the wall in centerfield to plate another run. Dutton lined a two-run RBI single to right center for Chattanooga’s fifth run.
Chattanooga exploded to take the lead 10-7 with five runs off four hits and a UNCG error. Osterman had the big hit a three-run home run to give the Mocs an 8-7 lead. With two outs in the inning, Chattanooga loaded the bases a hit a groundball to the pitcher but a throwing error allowed two runs to score on the play.
The Blue and Gold would respond with two runs in the bottom of the fourth off a two-run double by Nicole Thomas.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Nicole Thomas launched a solo home run off the first pitch to tie the game at 10-10.
The Blue and Gold return to action Wednesday, April 2 in a doubleheader on the road against Liberty starting at 2 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
