GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG baseball team embarks on its Southern Conference scheduled this weekend, hosting Furman for three games at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The teams begin the series Friday at 6 p.m. before closing it out Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats and a free video stream of each contest is available courtesy of the UNCG athletics department. Admission to the UNCG Baseball Stadium is also free for all fans.
The Spartans are coming off a 16-5 rout of UMES Wednesday in which they pounded out season highs in runs (16) and hits (19). The Paladins lead the long-time series over the Blue and Gold by a 31-27 count - including taking two of three last season in Greenville. In Furman’s last visit to Greensboro, the Paladins won the first two contests 11-3 and 9-8 before the Spartans salvaged the series finale with a 9-4 victory.
UNCG enters the weekend at 10-10 overall and is hitting a stout .289 as a team, with seven players batting .265 or better. The Spartans also sport a 4.35 earned run average. Senior infielder Sean Guite (Huntington Beach, Calif./Irvine Valley CC) is having a stellar campaign - pacing the team and the league in batting average at .440 while also leading the SoCon in hits and slugging percentage. Friday’s projected starter, sophomore RHP Ryan Clark (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City), owns the lowest ERA of any pitcher in the Southern Conference at 0.92. UNCG will also send junior RHP Max Povse (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) and senior RHP Dylan Thompson (Snow Camp, N.C./Guilford Technical CC) to the mound Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Furman comes in batting .280 as a team with a 4.78 earned run average. Jordan Simpson paces the squad with a .318 average with Chris Ohmstede right behind at .316. Opponents are batting .274 against a Paladin pitching staff that will send RHP Matt Solter (0-2, 3.77) to the bump against Clark Friday. Furman will then start RHP Elliott Warford (1-1, 2.84) Saturday and Alex Abrams (2-1, 7.43) Sunday to close out the series. The Paladins are 8-13 overall after falling to North Carolina Central by a 3-2 score Wednesday.
Following the weekend series, UNCG will play crosstown neighbor North Carolina A&T Tuesday at NewBridge Bank Park before heading up to the North Carolina mountains for a three-game set with Appalachian State next weekend.
