GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team begins Southern Conference play with a three-game series against Georgia Southern, starting with a doubleheader Saturday, Mar. 15 at 1 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans are 10-10 on the season while the Eagles, defending SoCon tournament champions, are 16-7. The series will conclude with a single game Sunday, Mar. 16 at 1 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium weather permitting.
The Blue and Gold dropped a single game to Eastern Kentucky, 5-2, Thursday at the UNCG Softball Stadium. UNCG made a rally in the sixth inning scoring two runs but left the bases loaded and couldn’t push any runs across in the seventh. S Sophomore Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) picked up her team leading 22nd RBI on a sacrifice fly. Freshman Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) earned a RBI single in the loss.
Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) leads the team with a .441 average on 26 hits, 12 runs scored, nine doubles, a home run and 14 RBI. Wright is second with a .386 average on 22 hits, seven doubles, a home run and 12 RBI. Junior Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) comes in third with a .368 on 21 hits, 11 runs scored, two triples and 6-for-7 in stolen bases. Sophomore Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) is fourth on the team with a .328 average on 21 hits and a team-best 16 runs scored at the leadoff spot. Nicole Thomas leads the team with five home runs and 22 RBI.
In the circle, senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) is 6-4 with a 3.24 ERA, including six complete games in 62.2 innings. Hanks has started 12 of the 20 games and has struck out 61 batters. Nicole Thomas is 2-5 with one complete game throwing 38 innings in 13 appearances. Sophomore Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) is 2-1 throwing 25.1 innings in nine appearances with 10 strikeouts.
Georgia Southern enters with a two-game losing streak after falling to Western Kentucky (L, 3-0) and Tennessee (L, 2-0). Kourtny Thomas leads the offense with a .379 average on 25 hits, 12 runs scored, eight home runs and 23 RBI. Shelby Morrill is second with a .311 average with four doubles, two triples, three home runs and 13 RBI. In the circle, Sarah Purvis, who was named the SoCon Softball Februrary Player of the Month, is 8-3 with a 0.78 ERA and has 10 complete games. Purvis already has thrown two no-hitters with one of them being a perfect game in her senior season. Purvis has only allowed eight earned runs in 71.2 innings and has 92 strikeouts. Georgia Southern leads the all-time series against UNCG with a 48-23 record, including winning three of four last season.
