GREENSBORO,N.C.- UNCG men’s tennis player Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) was named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Month for the month of February, the conference announced Thursday.
The junior from Snellville, Ga. went a combined 9-0 in the month of February after winning all five of his singles matches and going 4-0 at No. 1 doubles. Phillips helped UNCG stay perfect for February, notching a 5-0 record.
Phillips only dropped one set in the whole month after the Spartans swept North Carolina Central, USC Upstate, UNC Asheville, and Gardner-Webb and then closed the month with a 4-3 win over Campbell. Phillips earned straight set wins over NCCU’s Tamina Kienka, Upstate’s Gonzalo Bianco and UNCA’s Alex Croker, dropping just seven combined games against the trio, before losing his only set of the month, 4-6 to GWU’s Ernest Alberch. He bounced back with a 6-4 win of his own in the second set before picking up the 10-6 win in the super tiebreaker.
Phillips was an integral part of the Spartans win over the Camels. After UNCG dropped the doubles point on Feb. 26, Phillips quickly tied things up at one for the Spartans with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Rik Van Gerwen. Phillips and doubles partner James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) have wins at the top flight against NCCU, USC Upstate, UNCA and Gardner-Webb, highlighted by a 6-0 win over N.C. Central’s top duo.
