GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG redshirt freshman center R.J. White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) was named the Southern Conference CRONS Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday. White is the second Spartan to earn Freshman accolades this season, joining five-time winner Tevon Saddler (Aberdeen, Md./St. Frances Academy).
White averaged 14.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in the Spartans’ two contests last week coming off the bench in both games. He connected on 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from the field against two of the top three teams in the SoCon in Davidson and Wofford. He averaged 23 minutes per game off the bench for the Spartans this week.
White recorded his first career double-double, accomplishing the feat against SoCon Champion Davidson. He scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the Wildcats as he connected on 8-of-16 from the field. He followed that up with 13 points and six rebounds in the Spartans’ come-from-behind victory over Wofford Saturday night. He hit 6-of-10 from the field in the victory off the bench.
Since the beginning of February, White has been one of the top post players in the Southern Conference. He is averaging 11.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in the seven games during the stretch. He is shooting 54.4 percent (37-of-68) from the field and 62.5 percent (15-of-24) from the free throw line, while averaging 21.4 minutes per game.
White and the Spartans earned the sixth seed in the 2014 SoCon Tournament in Asheville and will open play Friday afternoon against No. 11 The Citadel at 4 p.m.
