GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s indoor track and field team completed the two-day Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem with eight points in the team standings, running almost exclusively in the distance events.
Senior Tyron Alston (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) was the Spartans’ top finisher at the event, placing fourth overall in the mile run earning the Spartans five points in the standings. Alston turned in a personal-best time of 4:21.42, trimming over two seconds over his top time set last year at the same event in the preliminary round. Junior Brandon Cain (Graham, N.C./Coker College) also picked up a point for the Spartans in the mile race, placing eighth overall in a time of 4:26.52.
Junior Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) added the Spartans’ other individual performance as he notched a point in the 5,000-meter race. Belles finished eighth overall with a personal-best time of 14:58.30 while Furman’s Hurt Tripp won the race in a time of 14:30.76.
The Spartans rounded out their scoring in the distance medley relay event, placing seventh overall to garner two additional points. Joining Cain and Alston in the event were sophomore John Elwood (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford) and freshman Dakarai Shipp (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) as they posted a time of 10:44.61. Samford won the DMR with a time of 10:02.54.
The UNCG track and field team jumps directly into the outdoor season March 14-15 as it travels to UNCW for the Seahawk Invitational.
