GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team swept Gardner-Webb, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
UNCG will head out on the road Wednesday, Feb. 26 against Campbell at noon in Buies Creek, N.C.
The Spartans earn their four-straight victory all by a 7-0 score. Gardner-Webb drops to 3-8 with the loss.
UNCG took a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and junior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) defeated Ernest Alberch and Nikita Zverkov, 8-5. Freshman Nazhone Wilkins (Burnsville, Minnesota/Home schooled) and sophomore Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) took down Tyler Macy and Brendan Dempsey, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point. In the final doubles match, sophomore Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) and senior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankera, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) earned a 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles against A.J. Stillwell and Benjamin Kaszas.
In singles, Mack won in straight sets against Jonathan Walker, 6-0, 6-2. Junior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) gave UNCG a 3-0 lead after defeating Macy, 6-2, 6-2.
Dougherty clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Zverkov at No. 2 singles. At No. 4 singles, Murray defeated Dempsey, 6-1, 6-3.
Phillips was able to win in the third set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6), against Alberch at No. 3 singles. Phillips won the second set, 6-4, and won the super tiebreaker 10-6.
In the final match, Sarioglu was able to earn a three set victory against Kaszas, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Sariglu fought back to win the final two sets, 6-2, 6-3.
