GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team picked up a single-game against Norfolk State at the Seahawk Invitational Sunday at Noon at Boseman Field.
The Spartans are coming off a 1-3 record at the Carolina Classic in Columbia, S.C. last weekend. UNCG earned its first win of the 2014 season against Presbyterian, 5-4, last Sunday.
The UNCG softball team's home tournament, Triad Blue/Gold Challenge, was canceled in its entirety due to inclement weather from Winter Storm Pax. UNCG was supposed to face Virginia and Radford twice before the storm hit the triad.
Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) leads the team with a .500 batting average on six hits, a double, one home run and six RBI. Sophomore Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) is second with a .417 average on five hits and two runs scored. Classmate Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) is at .385 with five hits, three runs scored, two doubles and an RBI.
In the circle, senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) is 1-1 with a 3.29 ERA in 13.2 innings and has 17 strikeouts.
Norfolk State will start its season at the Seahawk Invitational after a successful 2013 season that saw the Spartans post a 31-22 record, including a trip to the MEAC tournament finals for the second time in school history. Junior Haley Ward, last year's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Year, is back after finishing the season second in the nation with a .482 batting average while also setting school records for hits (68), doubles (21) and total bases (114). Senior hurler Jamie Schulle enters her third season anchoring Head Coach Heidi Cavallo’s pitching staff after an All-MEAC performance last year that saw her go 21-13 with a 3.11 ERA in 200.0 innings of work.
The Spartans will return home to host ACC foe Virginia Tech Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
