GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s basketball team returns home following a three-game road stint to host Davidson Saturday at Fleming Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the Spartans will celebrate National Women and Girls in Sports Day as well as “Play4Kay.”
The Blue and Gold has lost seven straight and 13 of 14 and will look to salvage a season series split with the Wildcats after Davidson handed the Spartans a 78-59 setback Jan. 13 at Belk Arena. In last season’s meeting between the teams at Fleming Gymnasium, the Wildcats escaped with a 59-56 overtime victory after Sophia Aleksandravicius’ layup with 39 seconds left in regulation sent the game into the extra session. Davidson leads the all-time series 28-20 and has won the last seven consecutive meetings. UNCG is 13-8 against the Wildcats in Greensboro.
The Blue and Gold enters the game with a 5-16 overall record and 1-9 league mark after falling to Elon 80-57 last Saturday at Alumni Gym. The Phoenix shot over 50 percent in each half and forced 24 UNCG turnovers.
The Spartans are averaging 63.9 points per game and are allowing opponents to score 73.3 points per contest. The Blue and Gold owns a -0.9 margin on the glass, averaging 39.0 rebounds and giving up 39.9 boards per game. The Spartans are second in the league in offensive rebounding at 15.8 per outing. In terms of shooting, UNCG is firing at a 35.6 percent clip from the field, 31.8 percent from beyond the arc and 66.3 percent from the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) leads the team in scoring average at 12.3 points per game while senior forward Janae' Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) paces the Spartans in rebounding average at 7.9 boards per contest. The Blue and Gold uses its bench liberally as nine players have appeared in 19 or more games.
Davidson is 11-11 overall and 8-3 in Southern Conference action after downing Samford 78-56 Monday at home. The Wildcats are averaging 69.5 points per game while giving up 72.3 per contest. Davidson also pulls down 35.2 rebounds per contest while allowing 42.0 - a rebounding margin of -6.8. The Wildcats are shooting 41.6 percent from the field, 35.7 percent from deep and 71.7 percent at the free throw line.
Laura Murray is the top offensive force for Davidson, averaging 19.2 points per game, while Dakota Dukes leads in the squad in rebounding average at 7.9 boards per outing. Murray and Hannah Early have combined to make 88 three-point field goals in 218 attempts.
Following its matchup with Davidson, the Spartans will host Georgia Southern Monday at 7 p.m.
