GREENSBORO, N.C. – Having dropped its last four games, the UNCG women’s basketball team looks to snap the skid when the Spartans travel to upstate South Carolina for a Southern Conference matchup with Wofford Saturday at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Blue and Gold is 1-5 on the road this year with the lone win occurring at Norfolk State. The Terriers are 3-2 at home with victories over UNC Asheville, Bluefield College and Western Carolina. Wofford also comes into the contest having lost four-straight decisions - their last win coming against the Catamounts Jan. 4 in Spartanburg. UNCG leads the all-time series 30-7 and swept the Terriers in two meetings last season, 87-75 on the road and 68-50 in Fleming Gymnasium.
In last year’s game at Benjamin Johnson Arena, sophomore guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) notched a career-high 27 points as the Spartans blew past the Terriers 87-75. UNCG shot 59 percent in the contest and won the rebounding battle 31-29 – including 11 offensive rebounds.
The Blue and Gold enters the game with a 5-13 overall record and 1-6 league mark after falling to Appalachian State 75-56 last Monday at Fleming Gymnasium. The Mountaineers shot over 50 percent in the game and out-rebounded UNCG 38-25. The Spartans are averaging 62.8 points per game and are allowing opponents to score 72.8 points per contest. The Blue and Gold owns a -2.0 margin on the glass, averaging 38.2 rebounds and giving up 40.2 boards per game. The Spartans are second in the league in offensive rebounding at 14.7 per outing. In terms of shooting, UNCG is firing at a 35.5 percent clip from the field, 31.7 percent from beyond the arc and 68.6 percent from the free throw line.
Senior forward Janae' Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) leads the team in scoring average at 12.1 points per game and is pulling down a team-best 7.9 rebounds per contest. She also has 57 offensive rebounds to her credit. Freshman center Mariah Wilson (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) is the team leader in blocked shots with 19. The Spartans use their bench liberally as 10 players have appeared in 16 or more games.
Wofford is 3-14 overall and 1-6 in Southern Conference action after suffering a 64-52 setback Saturday at Samford. The Terriers are averaging 55.5 points per game while giving up 69.4. Wofford also pulls down 35.9 rebounds per contest while allowing 42.8 - a rebounding margin of -6.9. The Terriers are shooting 32.3 percent from the field, 24.7 percent from deep and 69.6 percent at the free throw line. Jordan Frazier is the top offensive force for Wofford, averaging 12.4 points per game. Ashton Fleming leads the team with a rebounding average of 6.1 per contest.
Following its meeting with Wofford, UNCG will wrap up the weekend with a Monday affair at Furman in Greenville, S.C. Tipoff at Timmons Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
