GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s basketball team hits the road this week, travelling into the mountains to battle in-state and conference rival Appalachian State Thursday night. Game time in Boone is set for 7 p.m. at the Holmes Convocation Center. The game will be broadcast on 1320 WCOG AM with Scott Pryzwansky providing the call. Additionally, the game will be video stream via Appalachian State for a fee with a link available at www.uncgspartans.com.
The Spartans are coming off their first Southern Conference victory of the season with a 90-82 victory over Furman Monday. UNCG had one of its top offensive nights of the season, scoring 90 points and shooting 57.6 percent (34-of-59) from the field while handing out 18 assists. Four different Spartans scored in double figures in the victory and eight different players scored at least five points.
Junior forward Kyle Cain (Chicago, Ill./Arizona State) continues to lead the Spartans in scoring at 15.6 points per game, which ranks seventh in the league. Cain scored 12 points against the Paladins while battling through foul trouble as he has not scored in double figures 15 out of 17 games this year. Additionally, he ranks third in the league on the glass grabbing 8.4 rebounds per game.
Sophomore forward Kayel Locke (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) is second on the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game. Locke is coming off an 18-point effort against Furman and has scored in double figures 10 straight games, averaging 15.0 points per game during that stretch. Freshman guard Tevon Saddler (Aberdeen, Md./St. Frances Academy) returned to the starting lineup and scored 17 points on 7-of-11 from the field.
Junior Nicholas Paulos (Salt Lake City, Utah/New Hampton School) leads the team with 43 three-pointers made. Paulos is coming off a 4-of-8 performance from long range against Furman. Sophomore guard Jordan Potts (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) added nine points and a career-high six assists Monday night.
Appalachian State enters Thursday’s game with a 4-10 overall record and an 0-1 mark in SoCon play. The Mountaineers’ lone victories have come against Lees-McRae, North Greenville, Milligan and Bluefield State. Appalachian State is coming off a 75-66 loss at Elon Monday night.
Jay Canty returned to the lineup two games ago after missing the first 12 games due to academic issues. Canty has scored 32 points in his first two games back, shooting 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from the field. Tab Hamilton is second on the team in scoring at 13.4 points per game and has hit a team-high 34 three-pointers.
Tevin Baskin is third on the team in scoring at 11.6 points per game and second on the glass at 5.3 rebounds per game. Mike Neal rounds out the Mountaineers averaging double figures at 11.2 points per game. Michael Obacha leads the team and the SoCon on the glass, grabbing 9.4 rebounds per game.
Thursday’s game marks the 41st meeting all-time between UNCG and Appalachian State. The Spartans trail the all-time series by a 22-18 margin, including owning an 8-12 mark all-time in Boone. Last year, UNCG was swept in the regular season series, dropping an 83-70 contest on the road and a 76-67 game at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Former Spartan Derrell Armstrong led UNCG with 20 points per game against the Mountaineers while Trevis Simpson added 17.0 points per game and Locke chipped in 11.0 points per game. Nathan Healy, who averaged 20.0 point and 7.5 rebounds per game, led Appalachian State as the Mountaineers out-rebounded the Spartans by a 39.5-33.5 margin. Additionally, Canty chipped in 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds while Neal (14.5 points) and Baskins (12.0 points) also averaged double figures in the two games.
