GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) and sophomore Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) were invited to tryout for the Mexico national softball team in late November.

Vega had five plate appearances with three hits and two walks in three games. She played third base in the tournament against Cuba, the junior Mexico team and a professional team from California (Ruthless).

As a freshman at UNCG, Vega started 56 games hitting .297 on 52 hits, 19 runs scored, 11 doubles, two home runs and 22 RBI at third base. She had 17 multi-hit games and five multi-RBI contests.

Alcala started all eight games at the leadoff spot playing mostly in the outfield. She made an impression on the team hitting .533 in 21 at bats with five walks and four stolen bases. Alcala also was stellar defensively including a diving catch against Cuba.

“I didn't really know what to expect,” said Alcala. “I’ve heard a couple things about Team Mexico (talent wise) already but I made sure I went with no judgement. Since Danielle and I were new to the team we just went with the flow when it came to stretching and how they did things in Mexico. I wasn't really expecting to play much but what I did expect was to get a chance to show what I can do.”

During her sophomore season as a Spartan, Alcala was a 2013 Southern Conference second-team selection in the outfield. She hit .269 starting all 57 games with 43 hits, 25 runs scored, two doubles, three triples and 12 RBI.  She also
set a new career high with 14 stolen bases and had 11 multi-hit games.

“Overall, this experience has left me speechless yet I feel like a story teller,” said Alcala.  “I had fun playing the sport I love while representing where I came from. I thank God for the opportunity I was given and I feel truly blessed to have had it. The best feeling for me throughout this experience was making people proud. Not only was my family very proud of me, I had friends from back home (CA) rooting me on and supporting me. Even some of the baseball players here at UNCG were watching Danielle and I play live online.

Alcala was invited back to play with Team Mexico in a tournament in Cuba from December 16-22.

“I appreciate everyone who reached out to me as they have made my experience that much more special because I felt a sense of support,” said Alcala. “All I wish now is to continue this wonderful experience while being humble and see where it takes me.”
