GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) has been named this week’s Blue Chip Performer sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. This is the second year that BCBSNC has sponsored the Blue Chip Performer award, which is chosen weekly from all sports in season and runs throughout the 2013-14 UNCG Athletics season.
Mason, the 2012-13 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, netted a team-best 20 points in the Spartans’ contest against Atlantic Coast Conference member Clemson last Thursday at Fleming Gymnasium. She scored 18 of those points in the second half and set a career high with nine free throws made on 11 attempts. Mason also dished out five assists in the game.
Mason leads the Blue and Gold in scoring average this season at 14.0 points per game – good for fifth in the Southern Conference. She has dropped in double figures offensively in seven of eight games this year and seven straight outings. Mason is also shooting well from the charity stripe, having knocked down 46 of 57 attempts (80.7 percent). She is one of three Spartans who have made at least 10 three-point field goals.
UNCG opens its SoCon schedule Saturday, Dec. 14, against league preseason favorite Chattanooga. The Spartans and Mocs will tip off at 2 p.m. inside Fleming Gymnasium.
