GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior forward Janae' Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week according to an announcement Tuesday by the league. It is the first weekly honor for Stevenson and the first for the Spartans since Amanda Leigh earned recognition February 15, 2011.
Stevenson notched a pair of double-doubles in leading the Spartans to a 2-0 week that included victories over Norfolk State on the road and College of Charleston at home. She averaged 17 points and 12.5 rebounds in the two contests. UNCG has won three-straight games – the first such winning streak for the program since the 2010-11 campaign.
In the come from behind 73-66 win at Norfolk State Wednesday, Stevenson exploded for a career-high 24 points while matching her personal best in rebounding with 15 boards. She was also 9-of-17 from the field and 6-of-8 at the charity stripe. Additionally, six of her rebounds came on the offensive glass.
Stevenson excelled once more Saturday as UNCG hosted former Southern Conference rival College of Charleston and paced the Spartans to a solid 64-56 win over the Cougars. She dropped in 10 points and secured 10 rebounds while tallying her 105th career blocked shot. Stevenson was also 4-of-8 at the foul line.
In five games this season, Stevenson has posted three double-doubles and is leading the Blue and Gold in rebounding average (9.4 rebounds per game) while ranking second in scoring average (12.6 points per game). Her rebounding mark is currently good for third in the Southern Conference.
