GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s basketball team looks to notch its first road victory of the campaign Wednesday, traveling to the Tidewater area of Virginia for a non-conference contest with Norfolk State. Tipoff at Echols Hall is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Spartans played host to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference outfit last season at Fleming Gymnasium as the Blue and Gold captured a 71-63 decision Dec. 14. The game marks the second consecutive for the Spartans against a MEAC institution having played host to South Carolina State last Saturday.
UNCG enters the game with a 1-2 record after downing South Carolina State 72-63. A trio of freshmen started the game in guards Bailey Williams (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) and Shanese Harris (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) as well as forward Jade Scaife (Ft. Washington, Md./Archbishop Spalding). Senior forward/center Janae’ Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) notched her first double-double of the campaign with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes of action while sophomore guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) and senior guard Breonna Patterson (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley) scored in double figures with 17 and 13 points respectively. UNCG out-shot the Bulldogs by a .431-.397 margin - including a 53.6 percent first half - and out-rebounded SCSU by one at 42-41.
The Spartans are paced in scoring early in the season by Patterson and Mason as the backcourt duo is averaging 12.3 and 11.3 points per game. Stevenson averages 9.7 points per game to check in at third while she also leads the squad in rebounding at 7.3 boards a contest. Mason and Williams have combined for 18 assists (nine each) as the Spartans have recorded 40 helpers as a team - 20 of which occurred against South Carolina State. UNCG is shooting 33 percent from the field, 34 percent from deep and 67 percent from the foul line. The Spartans are also getting out-rebounded by an average of nine boards a game (47.7-38.7).
Norfok State enters the contest with a 1-1 record after defeating Radford 66-54 at home last Friday. Senior Rachel Gordon led the Spartans with 16 points and 16 rebounds and was 8-for-10 from the field. Junior Rae Corbo posted 12 points and dished out six assists while classmate Ebony Brown contributed 14 points and seven boards. Norfolk State shot 41 percent (24-for-58) from the field and hit 13 of its 17 free throw attempts to end up at 77 percent. The Spartans also out-muscled the Highlanders 44-40 on the glass. Norfolk State was 6-6 at home last season on the way to a 7-22 overall ledger.
With its victory over Norfolk State last season, the Blue and Gold picked up its first win in the series which now stands at 2-1 in favor of NSU.
Following the contest at Norfolk State, UNCG kicks off a seven-game homestand Saturday, Nov. 23, against former Southern Conference rival College of Charleston. The Cougars are in their first season as members of the Colonial Athletic Association. Tipoff for the non-conference matchup is slated for 2 p.m. inside Fleming Gymnsaium.
