GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior runner Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) was named the Southeast Regional Athlete of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Wednesday. The Division’s coaches vote on regional honors and there are only nine different regions throughout the country.
Chelimo finished first overall at the NCAA Southeast Regional race, claiming his first regional crown of his career after finishing as runner-up the last two seasons. His time of 28:37.21 is the fastest time in UNCG program history and was the fastest time in all nine regional races this year. In fact, the Southeast Regional race winning time was 46 seconds faster than the second fastest race, the Mountain Regional won by defending national champion Kennedy Kithuka of Texas Tech.
Chelimo has run three races this year and has won all three events. He won the Pre-National White race and the Southern Conference Championship race before his regional title. The three-time SoCon Runner of the Year has earned All-America honors the last two years in the cross country National Championship race, placing 10th and 13th overall.
Chelimo will battle for the 2013 National Championship title Saturday afternoon in Terre Haute, Ind. The 10,000-meter race is set for a noon start and will be streamed live online by the NCAA with links at www.uncgspartans.com.
