GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s basketball team concludes its season-opening four-game home stretch Wednesday night as the Spartans host crosstown foe Greensboro College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum. The game can be heard on 1320 WCOG AM with Scott Pryzwansky and Darryl Kosciak providing the call while the game will also be video streamed online at www.uncgspartans.com
Wednesday’s game is the first of four straight games as part of the Gulf Coast Showcase and is the only game for UNCG not played in Estero, Fla., at the Germain Arena. The game is one of five games played on campus sites against non-NCAA Division I opponents as part of the multi-team event. The Spartans will play three more games in three straight days in Florida Nov. 25-27, beginning against Louisiana Tech Monday.
The Spartans enter the game with a 2-1 record on the year after picking up wins over High Point and Chowan while dropping a game to East Carolina. UNCG is averaging 87.7 points per game this season while holding opponents to 72.3 points per game. The Spartans have controlled the glass so far this season, out-rebounding their opponents in all three games, holding a 45.0-30.3 advantage on the year.
Five different Spartans are averaging double figures with freshman guard Tevon Saddler (Aberdeen, Md./St. Frances Academy) leading the way with 19.7 points per game. Saddler, who was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week, ranks fourth overall in the league and tops among all freshmen in scoring in the SoCon. Additionally, he is averaging 13.3 free throw attempts per game – the most in the league by almost double as Gee McGhee is second at 7.7 attempts per game.
Junior forward Kyle Cain (Chicago, Ill./Arizona State) is second on the team in scoring at 18.0 points per game and second on the glass at 6.7 caroms per contest. Sophomore forward Kayel Locke (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) adds 13.3 points and 7.3 rebounds while freshman Tyrone Outlaw (Roxboro, N.C./Person County) leads the team on the glass at 7.7 rebounds per game and 12.3 points per game.
Junior Nicholas Paulos (Salt Lake City, Utah/New Hampton School) rounds out the Spartans in double figures scoring at 10,7 points per game. Paulos has hit a team-high seven three-pointers this year.
Greensboro College owns a 2-0 record on the year entering its first of back-to-back games at the Greensboro Coliseum beginning Tuesday night against Guilford. The Pride picked up wins over Bob Jones and Maryland Bible last week, averaging 75.0 points per game.
Damian Dixon leads the team in scoring at 22.0 points per game and on the glass at 11.0 rebound per game. Dixon is shooting 50 percent (17-of-34) from the field, but has hit just 1-of-9 from long range. Jacob Thomas is second on the team in scoring at 12.0 points per game while Will Griffin is third on the team at 10.0 points per game.
Wednesday’s game marks the 58th meeting all-time between UNCG and Greensboro College but just the third meeting since 1990. The Spartans trail the all-time series, which dates back to 1967, by a 28-29 margin but UNCG has won 10 straight in the series. The Spartans have won both games as a NCAA Division I member winning in 2003 (69-41) and 2005 (85-47). UNCG won the last eight prior to the move to Division I from 1985-1990 as Greensboro last won Feb. 16, 1985.
