GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG freshman guard Tevon Saddler (Aberdeen, Md./St. Frances Academy) has been named the Southern Conference CRONS Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Saddler leads the Spartans and all freshmen in the SoCon in scoring this season at 19.7 points per game.
Saddler averaged 24.5, 6.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game last week as the Spartans posted a 1-1 record. He set a UNCG freshman scoring record with 34 points in the Spartans’ one-point last-second loss to East Carolina, while also grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out five assists. He connected on 10-of-15 (66.7%) from the field and 14-of-19 (73.7%) from the free throw line in the game.
Saddler followed that up with a 15-point effort off the bench against Chowan in just 17 minutes of action in the 39-point UNCG victory. He also grabbed four rebound and dished out four assists against the Hawks. He was 4-of-7 from the field and 7-of-11 from the free throw line in the victory.
Saddler is shooting 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the field and has gone to the free throw line a league-high 40 times in three games. He is averaging 13.3 free throw attempts per game this season, tops in the league and almost double of the second most free throw attempts by Gee McGhee of Chattanooga (7.7). His 19.7 points per game ranks fourth overall among all players in the SoCon this season.
Saddler and the Spartans return to action Wednesday night as they conclude their four-game home stretch, hosting crosstown foe Greensboro College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum.
