GREENSBORO, N.C. – A total of 29 home games, a non-conference series at Georgia Tech and home and home series with a number of in-state rivals highlight the 2014 UNCG baseball schedule announced Monday by head coach Link Jarrett.
“I am very pleased with our 2014 schedule,” Jarrett said. “The quality of our opponents, as well as a few of the trips we make will give the club great opportunities and experience. Playing a few early season series on the road has proven to be productive and we look forward to that this spring. As always, the SoCon provides exciting baseball every weekend when we move into conference play. We are happy with the balance and layout of our schedule and are excited about the outlook of our 2014 baseball team.”
In addition to competing against four teams which qualified for a NCAA regional in 2013 (Coastal Carolina, Elon, Georgia Tech and UNC Wilmington), the Spartans will also face in-state foes Duke, East Carolina, High Point and Wake Forest both home and away.
The season begins at the UNCG Baseball Stadium with a three-game set against George Washington Feb. 14-16. UNCG remains at home during the midweek, hosting Duke (Feb. 18) and UNC Asheville (Feb. 19). Following a weekend series in which the Spartans will travel to Atlanta, Ga., to face Georgia Tech (Feb. 21-23), the Blue and Gold kicks off a seven-game homestand against Wake Forest (Feb. 25). The Spartans will also play High Point (Feb. 26) and Georgetown (Feb. 28-March 2) before matching up with Ohio (March 4) and ECU (March 5).
UNCG will head to the beach for Spring Break as participants in the Myrtle Beach Hyundai Classic – hosted by Coastal Carolina. In addition to facing the host Chanticleers (March 9), the Spartans will also battle UMBC (March 7) and Minnesota (March 8). The trip wraps up with games at East Carolina (March 11) and UNC Wilmington (March 12).
The Blue and Gold returns home for a seven-game homestand from March 15-23 which includes a non-conference series against Princeton and the Spartans’ first Southern Conference series versus Furman. UNCG will also host Maryland-Eastern Shore in a midweek contest during the stretch. The Spartans then play their annual game against crosstown neighbor North Carolina A&T March 25 at NewBridge Bank Park – home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
The rest of the schedule features home league series against Western Carolina (April 4-6), Elon (April 25-27) and Samford (May 2-4) as well as road sets at Appalachian State (March 28-30), Georgia Southern (April 11-13), Davidson (April 17-19), Wofford (May 9-11) and The Citadel (May 15-17). A quartet of non-conference games complete the slate as UNCG hosts the Aggies (April 2) while traveling to Wake Forest (April 8), High Point (April 15) and Duke (April 22).
All 10 Southern Conference teams will participate in the Southern Conference Championship tournament, scheduled for May 20-25 at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C. The Citadel serves as the host institution for the double-elimination tournament which will determine the league’s automatic representative into a NCAA regional.
