GREENSBORO, N.C. – Six prep seniors have signed national letters-of-intent to play softball for UNCG next season, head coach Janelle Breneman announced Friday.

“Our 2014 recruiting class is outstanding,” head coach Janelle Breneman said. “It is a group of very athletic, versatile athletes. I believe they have the talent to compete in the Southern Conference and help us win championships. This class will be expected to make an immediate impact in our program. These young ladies are not only talented student-athletes but they have a strong strength of character to add to our UNCG athletic department and to our softball program. I am happy to welcome each of them to our UNCG Softball Family.”

Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) – 5-7 R/R Pitcher

Bazonski is a two-time All-Eagle MVP as a pitcher at Mount Everett high school in Sheffield, Mass. Bazonski is the first Mount Everett athlete to play at a Division I college in the last 20 years. She led Mount Everett to a school record 22-2 mark and the Western Mass. Division III championship. Bazonski threw a two-hit shutout in the championship during her junior season. Her junior campaign was stellar throwing three no-hitters, two one-hitters, six two-hitters and 19 games with 10 or more strikeouts. She finished with over 236 strikeouts and posted three-straight shutouts in the Western Mass. Tournament.

“As a pitching staff we will have some big shoes to fill with the graduation of Raeanne Hanks.  Alicia's addition to our staff will go a long way in filling that void.  Alicia possesses the mound presence and great command of her pitches.  She has a very developed style and I like her ability to get ground balls and batters out.  Alicia also possesses the work ethic necessary to excel at this level.” – Coach Breneman

Gabrielle Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) – 5-7 R/R Shortstop/Infield

Cubbage is a three-time Henlopen All-Conference performer as a shortstop at Lake Forest high school in Felton, Del. She played four seasons with the Delaware Diamonds winning four Delaware State championships. Cubbage has played one season with the NJ Intensity in Farmingdale, N.J. under club coach Kevin O’Donnell. Also she has received many academic accolades in the DIAA (Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association) Academic Honors and won the Delaware women’s sports Alliance “Athlete of Promise” award in her sophomore year.

“A talented shortstop and third baseman that has been successfully competing at a high level of play. Gabi has great hands and gets good reads off the bat on defense. Her ability to drive the ball in the gaps and home run power will add additional pop to our line up.  I welcome Gabi’s athleticism and love for the game to the Spartan program.” – Coach Breneman

Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J.) – 5-5 L/R Shortstop

McClaskey is a two-time first team All-Conference selection as a shortstop at Overbrook high school in Pine Hill, N.J. She was awarded the 2012 outstanding offensive player and won the 2013 coaches award. McClaskey became the first junior in school history to reach 100 hits and will be the second female in school history to receive 12 varsity letters (Softball-4, Soccer-4, Basketball-4). McClaskey is looking to break the school record for most hits. Also played for the Newtown Rock club team under coach Joe Amendolara.

“Rachael is a speed threat from the left side of the plate that runs the bases extremely well.  She is a skilled infielder with a strong arm and has a great feel for the game.  Rachael’s determination and aggressive style will allow her to play multiple positions and strengthen us on offense as well as defense.” – Coach Breneman

Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C.) – 5-3 L/R middle infield/outfield

Overdiep is a 2013 first team All-Conference, All-District and All-state as an infielder/outfielder at Apex high school. She made second team All-Conference in 2012 and helped lead her team to a 2013 conference championship. Overdiep was an Academic All-Conference selection, scholar athlete and made the National Honor Society. She played for the Carolina Wildcats club team under coach Jeff McPhail winning the Dynamite Class tournament. Overdiep finished her junior season with a .458 batting average, 33 hits, 32 runs scored and a perfect 13-for-13 in stolen bases.

“Alexis is a left-handed slapper with speed.  Her quickness and finesse allows her to be a triple threat and I like her “get on base mentality.” Alexis is a well-rounded player with strong fundamentals, which makes her versatile on defense.  I have seen her make some outstanding plays in both the infield and the outfield.” – Coach Breneman

Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) – 6-0 L/R First base

Sholtes is a 2012 section 2 first team All-Star as first baseman at South Colonie Central high school in Albany, N.Y. She has won numerous awards leading her team to back-to-back Suburban Council South Division championship and two NYS Section II Class AA semifinalists. Sholtes made the 2012 Troy Record All-Area team. She was a second team All-Star in 2013 and was a high jumper in track & field for three years. Sholtes played for the Capital District Crossfire club team in Mechanicville, N.Y. under coach Gary Sears.

“Marisa is a natural first baseman with tremendous receiving skills around the bag.  She is explosive at the plate and will add left-handed gap and home run power to our offensive arsenal.  Her desire and excitement for the game with sound mechanics will help elevate us on defense and offense.” – Coach Breneman

Mackenzie Winslow (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) – 5-9 R/R Pitcher/First base/Outfield

Winslow, a local player from Mooresville, N.C., is a 2013 All-State award winner as a pitcher/utility for Lake Norman high school. Also she has been a stellar hitter with a high school career .387 batting average with 53 hits, 41 RBI, nine doubles, four triples and four home runs. She played for the Carolina Cardinals club team coached by Ben McKinney.

“We are excited local product Mackenzie Winslow will be joining us next fall.  We have really seen Mackenzie mature over the last few years and we are excited about her future as a Spartan.  I feel she has the talent, mental toughness and is an inspiring player to her teammates.   Mack will be a valuable member of our pitching staff and has the potential to add to the offensive line-up as well.” – Coach Breneman

UNCG will open its 2014 season in Columbia, S.C. at the Carolina Classic Tournament from Feb. 7-9 playing four games against Iowa, Ohio, Presbyterian and South Carolina.
