EARLYSVILLE, Va. – The UNCG women’s cross country team turned in an 11th place performance in the 38-team field at the 2013 NCAA Southeast Regionals hosted by Virginia at the Panorama Farms. UNCG placed four runners in the top 100 of the field and also set four personal records in the 6,000-meter distance.
Senior Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) led the Spartans with a 15th place showing as she set a personal-best time in the 6,000-meter race. Sumney finished with a time of 20:56.9, trimming 20 seconds off her previous top time of 21:17.79 set earlier this season at the Pre-Nationals.
Sophomore Lydia Saina (Eldoret, Kenya/Kapkenda Girls School) finished second on the team and 51st overall with a time of 21:44.50. Saina continued her vast improvement from her freshman campaign as he time dropped 1:34 from her mark at the NCAA Regionals last year at 23:18.33.
Senior Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) placed 59th overall with a time of 21:54.0. Redshirt freshman Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) ran her second career 6,000-meter race and posted a career-best time of 22:23.2, trimming 46 seconds off her time form the Pre-Nationals race earlier this year.
Senior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnston) also set a personal record in the distance in her final collegiate cross country race. Montague placed 100th overall with a time of 22:31.30, surpassing her previous top time of 23:08.70 set at the 2011 NCAA Regionals. Redshirt freshman Eira Jensen (Holmveien, Norway/Sortland VGS) ran the distance for the first time in her career and turned in a time of 22:48.40.
Virginia and William & Mary women qualified for the national race, and William & Mary's Emily Stites won in 19:57.5.
Two teams from each of nine regionals and the four fastest individuals not on those teams qualified for the NCAA meet at Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 23. Thirteen at-large teams will be chosen, and an NCAA committee also will pick two additional runners.
