GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men’s soccer seniors Mahdi Ali (Helsinki, Finland/Vuosaaren Lukio) and Oddur Gudmundsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Breidholti) were named to the All-Southern Conference team the league announced Tuesday. Additionally, midfielder Rouven Wahlfeldt (Velbert, Germany/Gymnasium Waldstrasse) and defender Hugo Coicaud (Le Havre, France/Saint-Joseph) were named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team.
Ali was named First Team All-SoCon this year, earning his first ever All-Conference accolade. The senior defender anchored the Spartans’ backline that recorded six shutouts on the year helping UNCG finish third in the league. He played and started all 19 games this season and added an offensive dynamic this season. He scored seven points on the year on the strength of three goals and one assist. Ali scored the game-winning goals against UNC Asheville in the opener and at James Madison.
Ali played and started every game in his UNCG career on defense. He finished his career playing 78 career games in a row, 22 his freshman year, 20 his sophomore, 17 his junior and 19 his senior year. The two-time team captain helped the Spartans win two SoCon Championships during his career and a berth into the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
Gudmundsson was named Second Team All-SoCon this season as the senior midfielder battled back from a season-opening injury to play the final 14 games of the season. He finished tied for second on the team in scoring with 10 points on the year, scoring four goals and adding two assists. He scored a goal against No. 11 Virginia, Georgia State and finished the regular season with two goals at Elon.
Gudmundsson earns his first ever All-Conference accolade this season after playing in 59 career games for the Spartans. He finishes his career with 13 goals scored and seven assists, having tallied at least 10 points in his last three years.
Wahlfeldt and Coicaud earned spots on the SoCon All-Freshman team this year, marking the sixth straight season UNCG has placed a member on the squad and the fifth time they have secured multiple recipients of the rookie honors.
Wahlfeldt has started all 19 games for the Spartans this season in the central midfield position and was rated the No. 81 freshman in the country by TopDrawerSoccer.com. He scored three points on the year while helping the Spartans post six shutouts as a team. He scored his first career goal in UNCG’s second half rally against Campbell, while also assisting the game-tying goal.
Coicaud moved into the central defender position and started 16 games he has played. He is rated No. 94 in the top 100 this season among all freshmen. He has helped to anchor the Spartans’ back line, which has posted six shutouts, second most in the Southern Conference this season. His play has helped UNCG to a 2-1-1 record so far this season in league play.
