GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG junior forward Kyle Cain (Chicago, Ill./Arizona State) has been named this week’s Blue Chip Performer sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. This is the second year that BCBSNC has sponsored the Blue Chip Performer award, which is chosen weekly from all sports in season and runs throughout the 2013-14 UNCG Athletics season.
Cain led the Spartans to an impressive 82-74 season-opening victory over Triad rival High Point Friday night in front of 5,734 fans at the Greensboro Coliseum. He tied for the game-high with 21 points while grabbing seven rebounds in just 27 minutes of action as he battled through foul trouble in the first half.
Cain, who was playing in his first career game as a Spartan after sitting out last year due to NCAA transfer rules, scored 17 of his points in the second half to lead UNCG to its first season-opening victory since 2007 (Georgia Tech). He connected on 9-of-13 from the field and hit both of his free throws while also handing out three assists. He scored one of the game’s pivotal baskets, nailing a three-pointer with 3:50 left in the contest to extend the UNCG lead back to double figures at 72-62.
Cain and the Spartans return to action Tuesday night as they continue their four-game season-opening home stand welcoming in East Carolina. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum.
