GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG volleyball team ventures out on its final road swing of the season this weekend, traveling to Furman and Wofford for a pair of Southern Conference contests. The Spartans (14-11, 7-5 SoCon) will battle the Paladins Friday before taking on the Terriers Saturday with both matches slated for a 6 p.m. start.
The Blue and Gold looks to duplicate its results against these same teams from two weeks ago when UNCG beat Furman and Wofford in a pair of 3-1 decisions at Fleming Gymnasium. Last weekend, the Blue and Gold swept Western Carolina while falling in three sets to Appalachian State.
With just four matches remaining before the conference tournament, the Spartans are in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings with Appalachian State and Elon. All three teams sit just one match back of third place Samford. The top eight squads in the league qualify for the SoCon Tournament hosted by Furman Nov. 22-24.
Since league play has started, the Spartans have put up some nice statistical numbers. In SoCon matches, UNCG ranks first in opponent hitting percentage, second in digs per set, third in hitting percentage and assists per set and fourth in kills per set.
Individually, senior middle hitter Morgan Freeman (Virginia Beach, Va./University of Connecticut) and junior middle hitter Vicky Harley (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood) are fifth and sixth in the league in hitting percentage, sophomore libero Katherine Santiago (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) is seventh in digs per set, Freeman is sixth in blocks per set and Hohman is eighth in assists per set.
Humphries paces the offensive attack for the Blue and Gold this season with 293 kills (3.15 per set) and is hitting .234 while Santiago leads the defense with 398 digs (4.47 per set). Freeman also tops the squad in aces per set (0.25) and blocks per set (0.82).
Furman (13-10, 9-3 SoCon) is led offensively by Christina Dorismund’s 278 kills and 3.20 kills per set average while Elle Ross anchors the defense with 427 digs and 4.85 digs per set. The Paladins are hitting .223 as a team and average 12.84 kills and 15.88 digs per set. Furman has won 10 of its last 13 matches to sit in second place in the SoCon standings.
Wofford (11-16, 5-7 SoCon) enters the weekend looking to stay in the mix for a league tournament bid as the Terriers are coming off a 3-0 loss to conference leader Georgia Southern last weekend at home. Taylor Baird owns a team-high 335 kills (3.32 per set) while Jessica Graham has racked up a squad-best 468 digs (4.54 per set). In terms of team play, the Terriers are hitting .196 while averaging 12.31 kills and 14.17 digs per set.
UNCG wraps up the regular season next weekend, making the short trip to Elon Wednesday before hosting Davidson Saturday for Senior Night.
