GREENSBORO, N.C. – The second-seeded UNCG men’s soccer team hosts sixth-seeded Georgia Southern in the first round of the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament Saturday night. Game time is set 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium and admission is FREE.

UNCG finished the regular season with an 8-8-2 overall record and a 3-2-1 record in the SoCon to finish third in the standings. The winner between the third-seeded Spartans and sixth-seeded Eagles will advance to the SoCon Tournament semifinals next Friday night in Greenville and will face the winner of second-seeded Elon versus seventh-seeded Appalachian State.

Junior midfielder David Reittinger (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) leads the Spartans in scoring with 11 points as he has found the back of the net four times and dished out two assists. Senior midfielder Oddur Gudmundsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Breidholti) has scored four goals this season, including two in the regular season finale at Elon as he has 10 points on the year.

Redshirt sophomore forward Dustin Gamradt (Kiel, Germany/Hebbleschule) leads the team with five goals scored on the year, all as a reserve forward. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Moffitt (Burlington, N.C./Williams) has played almost all of the year in goal and owns a 1.55 goals against average and six shutouts.

Georgia Southern finished the regular season with an 8-9-0 record and a 2-4-0 mark in SoCon play. The Eagles have won back-to-back games to end the regular season, including knocking off Furman on the road and defeating James Madison.

Witt Carlisle leads the Eagles in scoring with 15 points, scoring six goals and dishing out three assists. Hunter Norton is second on the team with 14 points as he has scored five goals and handed out four assists. Neal Bates has played every minute in goal and owns an 1.27 goals against average. Bates was named the SoCon Player of the Week for the final week of the season after picking up wins over Furman and JMU.

Saturday’s game marks the 16th appearance all-time in the SoCon Tournament by the Spartans, as UNCG owns a 27-11-2 record in the history of the event. The Spartans own the second-best winning percentage in SoCon Tournament history, notching a 70 percent winning clip, trailing only Furman at 74.2 percent. UNCG has advanced past the first round in 12 of its 15 appearances, while making the finals 10 times and winning it five times.

Conversely, Georgia Southern will be making its 20th appearance and owns a 11-17-3 record all-time in the event, for a 40.3 percent clip. The Eagles have advanced past the first round just eight out of 20 times and only made two finals appearances, without a tournament title.

Saturday’s game marks the ninth meeting all-time between UNCG and Georgia Southern in Southern Conference Tournament history. The Spartans own a 6-1-1 record all-time against the Eagles in tournament history and have advanced past the Eagles in seven of eight meetings. UNCG has out-scored Georgia Southern 21-5 in the tournament, including a 3-0 victory in the 2006 finals. Last season, the Spartans and Eagles also met in the first round with Georgia Southern picking up a 2-1 overtime victory to end UNCG’s season.

Saturday’s game marks the 26th meeting all-time between UNCG and Georgia Southern. The Spartans hold a commanding 19-3-3 advantage in the all-time series. Earlier this season, the Spartans scored two second half goals to rally past the Eagles 2-1 on Homecoming. Gamradt scored both of the Spartans’ goals as a reserve in the second half, finding the back of the net twice in a seven-minute span.

Last season, Georgia Southern picked up two victories over UNCG at home. The Eagles won 4-1 during the regular season before ending the Spartans’ season with a 2-1 double overtime victory in the first round of the SoCon Tournament. Prior to last season, UNCG had won three straight games in the series, outscoring Georgia Southern 17-1 in the process.
