SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) and Freshman Rebecca Burrows (Auckland, New Zealand/Mount Albert Grammer School) were selected to the Southern Conference second team, announced by the league office Tuesday.
“We are very proud of the recognition that Georgia, Chesney and Rebecca have received from the coaches within the Southern Conference,” head coach Steve Nugent said. “All of them set a very high standard for our team and we look forward to seeing them grow in the future.”
Burrows and classmate Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda’s Collegiate) were honored on the SoCon All-Freshman team.
The coaches selected an 11-member All-Conference first team, an 11-member All-Conference second team as well as an 11-member All-Freshman team and individual awards. They were not allowed to vote for their own players or themselves.
White earned her second career All-Conference selection after making the 2012 SoCon All-Freshman team a season ago. White led the team with six goals and one assist for 13 points. The Franklin, Tenn. native played in all 20 games, making 19 starts and scored the game-winning goal in double overtime on the road against Hawai’i. She picked up her first career two goal game against The Citadel. Four of her six goals were against conference opponents and had a team-high 49 shots.
Burrows picked up second team All-Conference accolades as a defender starting 19 games for the Spartans during her rookie campaign. The Auckland, New Zealand native scored two goals against conference foes adding a goal against Western Carolina and The Citadel. Burrows also played center back helping UNCG post 10 shutouts and only allowed three goals in the final six games of the season. Burrows also was selected to the 11-member All-Freshman team.
Brown wraps up the awards for the Spartans making the SoCon All-Freshman team after playing all 20 games at defender and midfielder. The Dunedin, New Zealand native was fourth on the team with three goals and two assists. Brown scored the game-winning goal against East Carolina and added a goal against Francis Marion. In the last six conference games, Brown moved to defense helping UNCG limit opponents to just three goals in the final six games of the season. Brown also held SoCon Player of the Year Nicole Dennion to just one shot in the game against Elon.
Dennion was named the league's player of the year and Furman’s Carlie Couch was the freshman of the year, while Furman’s Andrew Burr was the coach of the year.
