GREENSBORO, N.C. – Both teams battled for 110 minutes but neither came away with the victory as the UNCG women’s soccer team tied Elon, 2-2, on Senior Night Wednesday at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
“I think 2-2 was a fair result, both coaches knew what this meant fighting for the No. 2 seed,” head coach Steve Nugent said. “It brought out the best in both teams so I like playing against teams like Elon I would like a couple of those chances back. I am proud of my team for a lot of different levels tonight after being down twice and fighting back to tie the game.”
With the draw, UNCG sits at 10-6-3, 4-2-3 in the Southern Conference earning the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 seed Wofford Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Elon stays as the No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 Davidson Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m.
In the second overtime, Elon’s best chance to win the game came in the closing seconds as a free kick entered the box and nearly went into the goal knocking off the post with less than 10 seconds left. Just over two minutes earlier, a ball was played over the top to a charging Candice Forbes (Pleasant Garden, N.C./Southeast Guilford) who had a one-on-one with the keeper but Sydney Branson made the sliding save to keep the game tied at 2-2.
In the first overtime period not many chances were had as junior Ashley Stokes (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) fired the only shot going just high over the goal.
The second half saw the Spartans go down a goal early again as Catherine Brinkman put the Phoenix up 2-1 in the 58th minute after a nice cross from Kimmie Krauss.
UNCG pushed hard to tie the game and in the 73rd minute Katherine Rodriguez (Franklin, Tenn./Father Ryan) found the back of the net for her third of the season. Rodriguez took a pass from Tracy Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) beating the keeper with just under 17 minutes to play.
Rodriguez had a chance to end the game in the 85th minute but Branson made another key save to keep the Spartans off the board.
In a physical first half, both teams had chances early with Elon scoring first in the 13th minute as Bethany Houpt scored her second goal of the season off a setup from Chelsey Stark. The play started with a corner kick that bounced around the box when Stark passed to Houpt who blast a shot right into the upper left corner.
Just two minutes later, the Spartans almost found the equalizer when Lauren Lover (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) had a breakaway but her shot was turned away by Elon’s goalkeeper Sydney Branson.
UNCG tied the game in the 41st minute after a free kick led to sophomore Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) scoring her team-high sixth goal of the season. Freshman Katelyn Mountjoy (Highland Village, Texas/Marcus) started the play with a nice free kick into the box to setup White.
The Spartans finished the half with six shots compared to three for the Phoenix.
