GREENSBORO, N.C. – With playoff seeding on the line, the UNCG women’s soccer team hosts Southern Conference rival Elon Wednesday, Oct. 30 on Senior Day at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
“It is the matchup at the end of the year that we always circle on our calendar,” head coach Steve Nugent said. “Playing against Elon always brings the best out of our team. Chris does a fantastic job with his team and I know they will be prepared as they are playing great soccer. I hope that our players are up to the challenge because both teams are fighting for the No. 2 seed.”
Fans can bring their kids dressed up or dressed down to participate in Greek Treats 2013. Organizations around campus will be set up on the West side of the field with themed tables that will serve our trick or treat stations. Each station will have a game and candy. Admission is free. All you need is your trick or treat bag. Also the first 200 fans receive a free Bojangles gift card. The event will start at 6 p.m. and run until 8 p.m.
UNCG enters the pivotal contest at 10-6-2, 5-2-2 in the Southern Conference sitting in third place with 17 points. With a victory against the Phoenix, the Spartans can jump them for second place in the SoCon tournament and host a first round playoff game Sunday, Nov. 3.
Prior to the game, the Spartans will honor four senior members of the 2013 team with senior day festivities for forward Lauren Lover (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford), midfielder Katie Durst (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive), midfielder Christina Chai-Chang (Pembroke Pines, Fla./St. John’s) and goalkeeper Rachel Collins (Raleigh, N.C./USC Upstate).
Sophomore Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) leads the team with five goals for 10 points and has taken 43 shots. Junior Ashley Stokes (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) is second with four goals and two assists. Freshman Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda's Collegiate) is third on the team with three goals and two assists. Sophomore Katherine Rodriguez (Franklin, Tennessee/Father Ryan) has two goals with three assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) leads UNCG in net with eight shutouts, 90 saves and 0.77 goals against average in 18 games.
Elon is currently in second place with 18 points after earning a 1-1 draw against Samford last Sunday. The Phoenix has scored three or more goals in 11 of its 18 matches this season, averaging 2.72 goals per game. Sophomore forward Nicole Dennion leads the SoCon with 13 goals and five assists. Katie Murphy has started 15 games in net with two shutouts and 41 saves.
