GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team hits the road for its final non-conference regular season game of the year Tuesday night as the Spartans travel to Charlottesville, Va., for a meeting with No. 16 Virginia, which is riding a 10-game unbeaten streak into the contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium with live stats available via Virginia at www.uncgspartans.com.
The Spartans enter the game with an 8-6-2 overall record and have won three out of their last four games. UNCG is coming off a thrilling 2-1 victory over Georgia Southern Saturday night on Homecoming as it rallied for two second half goals. Redshirt sophomore forward Dustin Gamradt (Kiel, Germany/Hebbleschule) came off the bench and scored two goals in a span of 7:20 of the second half to take the Spartans from a deficit to a lead. Gamradt leads the team with five goals, all as a reserve, as he has only tallied 12 shots this season.
Junior midfielder David Reittinger (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) leads the team in scoring with 11 points as he has scored four goals and dished out three assists. Senior forward Brian Graham (Bowie, Md./Bowie) leads the team with four assists, as he is third on the team with eight points. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Moffitt (Burlington, N.C./Williams) owns an 1.36 goals against average with six shutouts.
Virginia enters the game riding a 10-game unbeaten streak and is ranked No. 16 in the nation. The Cavaliers are coming off one of the biggest victories of the season Saturday night as they knocked off previously undefeated and second-ranked Notre Dame on the road, 2-0. Darius Madison was named the National Player of the Week after scoring both goals in the upset.
The Cavaliers own a 7-3-4 overall record and a 3-2-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia ranks 12th in the nation in scoring, finding the back of the net 30 times in 14 games while only allowing 15 goals against. Eric Bird is one of 12 Cavaliers to score a goal this season as he leads the team with 15 points on the strength of six goals and three assists. Madison is second on the team in scoring with 12 points as he has found the back of the net five times while dishing out two assists. Jeff Gail has played all but 37:50 in goal and owns an 1.02 goals against average with six shutouts.
Tuesday’s game marks the fifth meeting all-time between UNCG and Virginia. The Cavaliers own a 3-1-0 record all-time against the Spartans but the two teams have not met for 10 years. The Spartans won the last meeting 1-0 Oct. 28, 2003 in Greensboro.
