ELON, N.C. – Junior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) won in straight sets to claim the B1 singles draw at the Elon invitational Sunday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Smith defeated Elon’s Ismael Sanchez, 6-4, 6-1, finishing the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record in singles.
"This weekend the team was plagued with injuries causing a few of the guys having to withdraw from the tournament," said assistant coach Brett Bernstein. "Cameron really broke through and played some great tennis. In his four singles matches he did not drop a set. His focus and metal toughness in all of his matches allowed him to overcome some difficult situations that were thrown his way."
In doubles play, all three doubles teams did not participate due to walkovers, which means the matches were not played.
UNCG will compete in one more fall tournament before beginning the spring season in January: the Winthrop Fall Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. on Nov. 1-3.
