GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team closed out the ninth annual Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in seventh place Sunday with a 36-hole score of 585 (290-295) at the Grandover Resort East Course. North Carolina won the event with a two-day total of 5-under par 571 (288-283), while Chattanooga was second with a 1-over par 577 (291-286).
Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) was the Spartans top finisher as he tied for sixth overall with a 1-over par 143. Jenkins opened the tournament with a 3-under par 69 Saturday before posting a 2-over par 74 Sunday. He held the individual lead after eight holes Sunday as he was 4-under at that time, before closing the day shooting 6-over on the last 10 holes.
Memphis’ Lars van Meijel and North Carolina’s Henry Do tied for medalist position with 5-under par 139. Van Meijel came from behind as he carded the low-round of the event Sunday with a 6-under par 66 to go along with his 1-over par 73 Saturday. Do held the day one lead after a 4-under par 68 and picked up a stroke Sunday with a 1-under par 71. Only eight golfers finished the 36-hole event under par.
The Bridgestone Golf Collegiate is in its ninth year and is one of the most prestigious events of the fall season. This year’s field included 10 teams ranked in the top 100 in the golf rankings in No. 64 UNCG, No. 10 Virginia Tech, No. 30 Iowa State, No. 31 Purdue, No. 33 Memphis, No. 54 Georgia State, No. 58 Mississippi State, No. 66 North Carolina, No. 75 VCU, No. 76 Washington State, No. 79 N.C. State, No. 84 Chattanooga.
Sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) finished tied for 16th overall with a 1-over par 145. Coalson opened with a 1-over par 73 Saturday before rallying for an even-par 72 Sunday. He closed with two birdies on his final four holes, picking up a stroke on No. 16 and No. 18.
Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) battled to a 26th place finish with a 3-over par 147. Dixon opened with a 1-over par 73 Saturday before carding a 2-over par 74 Sunday. His up and down round two saw him post four birdies, including two on back-to-back holes No. 14-15, but also card six bogeys, including three straight from No. 16-18.
Freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) finished in 44th place with a 6-over par 150. McGlone turned in scores of 3-over par 75 in both rounds. Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) rounded out the Spartans’ lineup with a 154 (76-78).
Junior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) played as an individual and finished tied for 30th overall with a 4-over par 148. Ehlert opened with a 78 in round one but recovered to post the Spartans low-round Sunday with a 2-under par 70 as he posted five birdies, including four on his back nine. Additionally, redshirt freshman Will Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) carded a 155 (78-77) as an individual.
The Bridgestone Golf Collegiate is the Spartans’ final event of the fall season. UNCG returns to the course Feb. 23-25 when it travels to the Puerto Rico Challenge.
